ARMOREL — Brittany Brooks became the first Armorel softball college signee in the program’s 5-year existence Wednesday, inking with Dyersburg State Community College.
She joins summer ball teammates Ashley Snow and Tiffany Thaxton, both Blytheville High seniors.
Snow signed a letter of intent with Dyersburg State on Monday, while Thaxton penned her signature Jan. 22.
“This is getting to be a regularity,” Dyersburg State head coach Randy Hulme said. “I feel like we’re probably getting the best athlete in this area with Brittany Brooks. No doubt about it. She is another one that will come in and help us take our program to the next level. She has a lot of athleticism. She can do a lot of different things. Right now I’m looking at her as a shortstop. As far as I’m concerned, it’s her position to lose. I don’t promise positions, but with her it’s hers to lose. If she comes in and does what she’s supposed to do, I expect her to be a mainstay for us. It’s just another good day for Dyersburg State softball. It doesn’t get any better than this.”
An all-stater in basketball and softball, Brooks has been a 4-year starting pitcher-shortstop for the Lady Tigers. She has been a major piece in Armorel’s back-to-back regular season and district tournament championships, its 2007 Region 3 tournament title and last year’s trip to the second round of the Class A state tournament.
Other schools interested in Brooks included Crichton (Memphis), Lyon College, Williams Baptist and the University of the Ozarks.
“It’s close to home,” Brooks said of choosing DSCC. “I played for Randy for three years in the summer. I’ve taken pitching lessons from him. I’ve gotten to know him. I think it’s a good place to start.”
