Looks as if we will both get to see them play the Pirates.
I've got tickets for May 31st.

That was a tough one tonight.
Hate to see Adam pitch such a good game, then see the bullpen fail, BUT the Cards are still rolling!

Go Cards! nearsports/clap.gif

I'm ready to trade Izzy while he still has some value and bring up Perez as the closer.

Underagefan- 05-09-2008
Once again, another good game by the starter, but another blown save by Izzy. Anyone in favor of trading him?

bearbait- 05-10-2008
How ironic it is that we just inked him to a pretty good contract after the great season he had last year right. We can't be dealing with him like this all season if this is how he is going to finish out games!

By the way, I am taking in the June 20th game against San Diego( which means a whales vagina). I am having to do a lot of traveling this summer and couldn't fit one in until then. I hate it, but that is the way things are looking.

Not much market for closers who have a 7.47 era and 5 blown saves at his salary. He says he wants out of the closers role for a while.

Chris Perez sure looks good right now, but at 22-23 years old is he ready?

Why not give him a shot?

I'm sure he can't do any worse than Izzy.

Right now Franklin and Springer are going to get the save chances.

Franklin looked good today.

The Bassmaster- 05-12-2008
If Perez is slated to be the future closer, I'd like to see them give him a little taste of big league closing while Izzy is on the shelf.

Closers are overrated and most the time their success is attributed to getting lucky more times than not. As successful as Izzy has been in his career without being a dominant strikeout guy is alarming. As many runners that reach with walks and ground ball base hits off Isringhausen, it's no wonder why he has the propensity to blow saves. When they come in bunches, he's staring at a four run inning if one of those ground balls don't go right at someone.

Looking at Izzy's stats, his swing percentage and contact percentage is about 7% off from his career. Players have swung at 7% less stuff than what he has shown throughout his career and have made contact with 7% more. Normally players swing at around 74% of his strikes, this year it's at 68%. Normally people make contact off Izzy around 78% of their swings, this year it's at 84%.

I haven't been watching him much this year, but is he just that much more hittable this year or is it just bad luck that will revert to his norms given time?

The Weatherman- 05-12-2008
Izzy is a VERY OVERRATED closer. Allways has been. I like Fraklin as our closer.

I would disagree with the blanket statement that "closers are overated." Izzy has single handedly cost the Cards 4 games this year. There is not another player on the team that is responible for 4 losses. Being a closer takes two things, a mentality and stuff. Izzy's mentality hasn't changed but his stuff is just not there. His cutter looks like a beach ball coming up there to batters. He doesn't have overpowering stuff, but like he said the other day he is "throwing like a second grader." The Cards have a few guys in AAA that have closed in the minors and are more of a strikeout type pitcher. Ideally, bring Perez up to setup for a half year then let him close. Houston Street in Oakland is one of the few that came right in to close in the big leagues.
