Full Version : Cheerleading competitions on NEARsports Radio?

Grim- 07-22-2006
I have to admit that when it comes to cheerleading competitions, I am truly ignorant. I have no idea what goes on at one or how to cover one.
If NEARsports radio covered one of these events live, would people listen?
Coach James - ACC- 07-22-2006
I think people would listen. It would probably be a slow growing process, but I think that people would find it interesting.
There are really only 2 local competitions that will be coverable (i.e. competitions that will have plenty of competitors local and out of NEAR.) Spirit of the South Cheerleading Championships, hosted by the Arkansas Cheer Company and ClearChannel Radio being held in November and the ACCA Regionals being held at Nettleton in January.
Spirit of the South will be for All-Star and Varsity cheerleading while Regionals will be strictly varsity.
If you want to go a little further, you can cover the State Competitions in NLR and the Grand Championships in Conway. There will be a big showing from NEArkansas at these competitions so it might be worth your while.
Thanks for listening!

Can you provide with me with the dates of these competitions?

Just a question. Don't get mad, but how would you describe what was going on.

I wouldn't. I'd get Coach James from ACC and Coach Curtis from CU to do it. They are the proffessionals. I wouldn't have a clue.
And why would I get mad? That's a logical question.

How would they describe it? It may be just be me, but that sounds kind of boring.

No one is forcing you to listen.

I was just saying it would hard to describe the action.
Coach James - ACC- 07-23-2006
Honestly, the verbal description of a cheerleading competition is far from boring. The right announcers with the knowledge of the sport and the actual events on the floor can really accent the competition itself.
Cheerleading is the most intense 3minutes of any sport (save maybe bullriding, but you only get 8 seconds there) and a radio broadcast can really make things interesting and more fun.
I'll work on getting you the dates of the local competitons and will be glad to work with you on arranging the best way for you to cover the events.
Thanks for the interest in covering cheerleading around here! I am sure I speak for everyone when I say it would be a great idea and I hope a worth while venture!
Thanks for listening!

It is to you. And a lot more people I am sure. And that’s cool. To each their own. However to the majority it is not. I would venture to say that most people on here would vote for something else. Like I said though "To each their own"
With that said. I believe Cheerleaders are very good athletes. They work very hard, and deserve respect for their talents. I just wouldn’t go as far to say the most intense.
Coach James - ACC- 07-24-2006
You are right, to each his own. But, I venture to say you probably have never been to a cheerleading competition. I welcome you to attend any competition this year, local or national, and I would like to see your opinion afterward.
In fact, my company co-hosts a cheer competition right here in NEAR. I'll provide you with a complimentary ticket to the event. It will be in November. Afterward, we can discuss further whether or not cheerleading is intense or not.
Thanks for your opinions! Thanks for listening.

I have been too a few. I dated a few cheerleaders in the day. Still don't put it in the top 100 best three minutes in sports. Unless you mean sporting events that only last three minutes. Then because it is the only one. It is at the top of the list.
Coach James - ACC- 07-25-2006
Cheerleading back in the day is nothing like cheerleading now. Anyone involved in cheerleading today is well aware of that.

Thank you for your logical foray into the time break down of sporting events. I can break down any sport and call it the most intense *insert time of event* and put it in my top 100 list for that time. That takes little thought process and/or time to formulate that little nugget of humor.
You obviously have had some bad luck with cheerleaders in the past. Maybe you should stick with another group or forum that won't show your frustration.
As it stands, I'll categorize "modern" cheerleading routines as one of the most intense sporting events period. It easily makes my top 5 as far as over-all effect and captivation. And that is of any sport. I've played just about every sport that you can think of, except lacrosse and jai alai. When it comes to pure intensity for the duration of the event, you cannot compare to the over-all appeal, excitement, and drama that can come from a well crafted routine.
But I will say this, if you don't know what to look for, you won't enjoy or have any clue as to what is going on. People who have recently been around the sport will know the terminology and be able to visualize the skills. All sports have a general guideline of terms, phrases, and rules and if you are a follower of those sports, you know them and understand them.
The topic is about broadcasting cheerleading competitions in NEAR. Grim made the perfect point in saying you don't have to listen. Pretty much sums it up.
But again, to each his own opinion. We know yours now. Please find another forum. Please stop trying to exibit some latent fear of cheerleaders by being critical of something you really know little about. It's an insult to today athletes that participate in cheer"athletics" and an insult to the parents and coaches who work hard. If you truely believe that cheerleaders are athletes and they deserve credit for their skills, then there is no reason to make statements that would degrade them and their abilities.
If you think it would be boring, don't listen.
Thank you and have a nice day!

Okay I am a little off topic. I can fix that. I say not many people will listen. Give it a shot it might work, but I really don't think so.
If you don't want people to disagree with your opinion don't post it on an open forum. For you information the team I watched at competition was the Ridgecrest team that won a National Title. Every member of that squad could do a standing back. They had for or five of the best tumblers you ever seen. All of them took gymnastics twice a week. I don't think the sport has evolved that much in the past ten years. Over all it may be better, but not that much better than that team. If at all.
I do have one question for you. Are you one of those people that believe that the gyms are packed at basketball games to see the half time show? To fill a gym you would need somewhere in the range of 15 squads to put as many people as two basketball teams can. Intense, sure. At the top not even close.
Thank you. And have a Cheerful Day

I can't believe I have kept my mouth quiet this long. You obviously don't know much about cheerleading, because winning a national title really doesn't say much. What matters is how many squads were in that division, and what competition it actually was. Any squad can win a national title. And actually cheerleading has evolved that much. A squad with standing backs is really not very uncommon. Cheerleading changes everyday because you always have crazy people out there trying new skills and pushing the limit. In cheerleading, pretty much anything you think of you can do. As long as you have the right safety and techniques. There are teams now with practically squad standing fulls (Cheer Athletics Wildcats). That team is truly amazing. And not trying to be rude, but I'm doubting they had four or five of the best tumblers I have ever seen. I have seen a lot. You actually have, in my opinion, some of the best tumblers in Arkansas right here in NEA. Believe it or not! Bryan Carter, I would put in the top three. And Kasey Boyd, Brysen Carter, and Kalend Hunter all ranking high on that list as well. Oh in my opinion, cheerleading broadcasts would be amazing!
