Nettleton rolls to Briarcrest tourney title
MEMPHIS — Nettleton went undefeated on the day on its way to the championship of the Briarcrest Beat the Heat tournament on Saturday.
The Jonesboro Lady Hurricane finished in a tie for third.
The Lady Raiders did not drop a game through pool play. On their way to the perfect day, Nettleton defeated White Station 25-9, 25-14, St. Benedict Academy of Memphis 25-13, 25-14, Houston, Tenn., 25-13, 25-20, Harding Academy of Memphis 25-19, 25-16 and Jonesboro 25-15, 25-19.
Nettleton (2-2) was led by Jordan Williams, who had 81 assists, 24 kills, 18 digs, three blocks and nine aces on 61-for-68 serving. Rachel Purtee added 38 assists, 27 kills, five digs, 56-for-58 serving with eight aces and two blocks, while Lindsey Malone had 34 kills, four digs and one block.
“Rachel Purtee’s leadership was key for us today,” Nettleton coach Vickie Gatewood said. “Her play was amazing today.”
The Lady Raiders were also helped out by Kelsie Hodges, who had 66 kills, 13 digs and went 68-for-73 serving with 13 aces; Madison Rupard, who had nine kills, three digs, two blocks and three aces on 21-for-23 serving; Mallory Muckensturm, who added two kills, eight digs and went 65-for-69 serving with 18 aces; Staci Ho, who had two kills, 16 digs and three aces on 28-for-34 serving; and Meridith Vincent, who was 7-for-7 serving with three digs. Also, Anna Wyatt contributed 47 digs and McKenzie Rouse had 12 digs.
