I know volleyball is over but id like your opinion..... We have two coaches that do not want to give..

..Volleyball comes first-cheerleading comes first...

I don't want to hear about cheerleading is not a sport, that is not the issue.
MY daughter has cheered since she was in 4th grade and now she is being told that, in her senior year she is going to have to choose one over the other. They are played at 2 different times of the year and Volleyball only interferes for 3 months of this year and competition isn't until February . I don't feel this is fair. Now i now that there will be those of you who say this happens all the time but Bay is a very small school with limited extra curricular activities for theses kids. NO drama classes, or theater, no school newspaper barely a band. Come on, give me a break. So they are telling me that my 3 sport athlete is gonna have to sit out and wait for softball to roll around. Thats 6 months of wasted time. So i guess she gets a job to kill the time , then we all know what happens then, she doesn't play school softball or summer ball because she's become dependent on the money. This will be her Senior year....give me a break!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for listening and please respond as needed....lol

The cheerleading coach probably does not want her cheerleaders to risk the chance at a valuable cheerleading scholarship with an injury from volleyball. nearsports/07388820.gif

That is stupid. She should be able to do both. It sounds like somebody at that school either the VB coach or cheer sponsor has a hidden agenda.

Happens everywhere. Bethany had to drop spring band last year so she could play softball and now the band director this year is not letting her go to StLouis for a band trip at the end of the year even though she is still in jazz band all year. He really made it hard on her last year saying very mean things about her priorities. Well those of you who know Bethany know she had no problem in telling him to stuff his priorities, she said she had priorities and she was making that decision to put her top priority on top!!

Sad...I hate it when hs coaches do this to the players. What is the coach's motivation for this?

When I played, our coaches encouraged us to play for better all around conditioning and such.

Good thing Jennie Finches high school coach didn't feel that way!! She played volleyball and basketball in high school. I think Cat Osterman did too. I think if they have the skills and the grades don't suffer the players should play whatever they want. Some coaches say they don't want them to get hurt. Well mine could hurt herself getting out of bed.

Knowing yours...that's so dang funny. nearsports/07388820.gif

Thinking about that, I know a few others including mine that could (or have). nearsports/07388820.gif

From what I hear, it's not the volleyball coach that's making them choose.

there doesn't seem to be motivation or a agenda, it just seems to me to be a power struggle. Cheer coach wants equal time in the fall when volleyball is the priority. The new v-ball coach is saying v-ball is the #1 priority and will not budge.

There are two more sad issues here. Last year bay sr. high consisted of 5 kids, this year its 12. Does the cheer coach really think she can build a program making these kids make a choice.
#2- my daughter became captain with 1 day of practice and a try out because it was softball season. CAPTIAN!!!! Next year she says she wont cheer. I guess we'll see...

Bay is going to have to offer some sort of conditioning for her cause she doesnt want to sit out for 6 months. She actually said she might sit on the bench in basketball just so she can get the conditioning that goes with it. blink.gif

It is simple all people want to be successful and want to do good but they are not willing to do what it takes to get there. Im not on either side here but the cheer sponser wants to take cheerleading to the next level and the vb coach wants to get vb to the next level and back on the map at Bay. For the gils involved they will just simply have to pick which one the like the most.

I'm from Bay and am familiar with the situation. I know someone on the v-ball and cheer team. Several in fact. The problem lies with the v-ball coach being totally inflexible. She seems to think that whatever she has going is the only thing going. Her attitude has caused many v-ball players to quit with more on the way. At this rate they will be lucky to have a team in a year.

The volleyball program at Bay is on the right track. It's about time it was made clear that volleyball is an athletic sporting event, just like basketball or softball, not a social event, like most of the girls at Bay seem to think it is.

Athletic sporting events require lots of hardwork, sweat, desire, and dedicatition. The girls that quit, they were attending a social event.

Thanks to Coach Jolley for putting in the time and effort to help bring the Bay volleyball program back to where it belongs. And, thanks to Chip Lane for supporting the volleyball program 100%.

I wish this would've happened before my own daughter graduated.

you can not be flexible if you want to be the best. BUT in a small school there are separated seasons....
cheerleaders, only practice one day a week through summer and fall. Its just practice. Heck, they do not learn a lot during this time its mostly for the new girls.
volleyball goes on for such a short period of time that a practice can not be missed. If your setter has cheer practice, your whole team is affected by her missing. yes, stacy wants the c-squad to be the best but i believe rescheduling practices would be a better solution. Jolly is just asking for 3 out of 12 months.
As for the comment about players quiting...Thats because they dont want to work and they want to start whether they are qualified to do so or not.. That is really not the issue.
