Alex Dillard was another long range bomber.......I remember one game he announced that he would hit one from the tail of the pig! Can't remember if he did tho!

| QUOTE (hoopswatcher @ February 10, 2008 10:21 pm) | He looks good.Lets hope he doesn't turn outlike Cannon Whitby from Obion Cnty in TN. He was in one of Nolan's first few signing classes. He avg about 30 a game in high school, long range shooter. I remember they played Blythville when he was a sr and scored like 55. He signed with Hogs and only played in mop up time. Had a hard time getting shot off in college. This guy reminds me alot of Whitby.
Hope I am wrong. |
I think Whitby was there while Eddie Sutton was still coach.
*Yes, he was a Freshman in 1987.

Richardson took over at Uof A in 1985 so Whitby definately played for Richardson. .
Good story on Hog recruit Daniel Payne, plus more on Rotnei Clarke and Brandon Moore.

Rotnei is tearing it up.
If he's even half as effective as he's been in high school, he should be an immediate impact player next year.
In my mind, the unknowns on this kid are can he work within the offense to get an open shot, can he create his own shot off the dribble, and can he play solid defense on the next level, and overall does he have a good basketball IQ?? Nothing worse than having a guy who can put up 20 points a game, but gives up 25 to 30 due to turnovers and because he can't play defense.
He's doing it all right now, I'm just saying the competition in the SEC is a little more fierce than that of the Oklahoma public leagues.
Either way, I'm excited about next years class. I'm more excited about this incoming class then I was about this years team loaded with seniors.
Can't wait to see new blood donning Razorback Red.
GO HOGS!!!!
Just watched video on Clark. SLOOOOOWWW!! Can't say I'm near as excited as the rest about him. Big difference when people are hedging on screens, or doubling on ball. He won't get open looks in SEC against top notch guards, and won't have impact. I hope the rest of the recruits have much more athleticism than this kid.
I'm a Hog fan, but we can't win championships in SEC with this type of guard starting. Not even debateable!!

Thanks for sharing your lack of knowledge. I'm sure you'll come back here over the next 4 years and admit your mistake
So Yaz,
You're saying, for the record, he is quick and can play with the guards Florida, Tenn, Ala, etc recruit year and year out? GET A CLUE! You have to be able to create off the dribble as a 2 guard with the clock running down and this young man won't be able to do that against SEC starters. He was running off screens and the defense wasn't switching or hedging on the video I watched. Maybe your grand knowledge missed that. He looks like a great shooter, but so was Whitby, and the boy from Mtn View Nolan recruited, and so is Rakestraw I'm told, but you don't see him playing do you ?
I will admit that Clarke does not look very quick or athletic, I've said that before on previous posts.
But if you have read anything about the game in which he broke the OK state scoring record, you would know that he was not getting open looks because the defense was not hedging or switching/communicating.
That team did not want the scoring record set on them that night and they double and in some cases triple-teamed Rotnei and he still tore off 37.
If he's smart with the basketball, makes good decisions, and we have another scoring threat on the floor at the same time, he should be able to get open looks, even in the SEC.
I hope so, but I'll believe it when I see him starting at UA. That will tell me JP knows it can happen. Obviously, he doesn't believe that about Rakestraw or he would be on the floor.

What was the white kid's name that started for Florida last year, the one that tore the SEC up from behind the arc and driving into the lane? I see Rotnei as that type player.

Clarke has a very quick set up and release. He can shoot going left or right. He can fade in any direction and still be very accurate. He also uses screens very well.To compare him to Whitby or Gilbert is senseless. While they were accurate shooters, they were zonebusters, meaning they had to be squared up and open, that's the case with Clarke. My only concern with him will be his defense, he's offense will be fine.

His name was Billy Humphrey
