Does anybody else in here like to kayak? If you do then where are some places that ya'll have been that are semi-challenging?

PTMurph- 03-22-2007
I used to guide kayak tours of Lake Charles. It's not even remotely challenging, I just thought I'd contribute that.

haha thanks for that Murph. I am still a novice but my favorites are narrow, fast flowing streams with a couple steep dropoffs.

I personally don't really care for the sport. I'm more of the outboard motor type.

Eleven Point and Spring are the best around here.

Yea i've been to spring countless times. I'm actually thinking about hauling it up there tomorrow since i'm off work. I want to make a weekend trip out of the Buffalo up around Ponca. Are there any good falls on the eleven point?

Eleven point is less of a challenge than Spring. It is very pretty and the current is pretty good. If you like to fish for smallmouth, it is great. There are a couple bad spots on it, I think they are old dams.

just got back from an adventure at Reynolds Lake here in Paragould. I decided to stay close to home so I just dropped it in for about an hour or so. No challenges whatsoever unless you count the stagnant water but it was beautiful out today.

If you have already done the Spring. The best two left, around here, will be 1. Eleven point, 2. Strawberry.

thanks Weatherman. Yes i think i've floated the spring enough to be considered somewhat of an expert. It is fun but gets old after a while. I would like to try the current river or maybe float the St. Francis from Chalk Bluff to Kennett.

Current River runs about 200 yrds from my parents house. You could put in in Doniphan and go to Reyno. Current River is me favorite river. I love it.

Sigma, if you want to travel that far, I hear that the Cossatot River is the best by far in the state.

The Big Piney Creek (between Russelville and Jasper) is a big hot spot during the springtime as well.

I think Cache River has some of the best to offer. I like to put my kayak in around
Delaplaine and have some one pick me up around Sedwrick. Takes a little time; but it can be done. It is not for the faint of heart and some points can be quite danagerous; so i suggest that a person practice before they attempt this.

Several of the area state parks (Lake Charles, and I think Lake Poinsett and Lake Frierson) offer beginners kayak courses from time to time. It's pretty basic stuff but good for a beginner.
