I stated in one of my earlier post that I was afraid ASU would screw this up and it would be like the movie "Ground Hog Day" all over again. This hire was an absolute no brainer. Only idiots could have messed this up! ASU had the opportunity to get a coach that would have brought them national attention and could have laid the foundation to be a top 40 team year in and year out. But no, ASU is too smart and too good to hire Nolan Richardson. I am ashamed to be an ASU graduate. I've grown tired of the simple minds that have diluted the sports program and I'm done with em. One of the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life was to attend ASU. I chose between ASU and Memphis State. What an idiot I was. However, I am not a big enough idiot to continue following and supporting an institution that continues to run their Sports Program into the ground. They don't listen to their fans nor do they exhibit any sign of common sense. I'm sure I'll be bashed over this post....but it really doesn't matter. Cuz you won't see me posting on this board again regarding ASU. I AM DONE WITH ASU. Years and years of paying a High School level coach, watching the program being ran into the ground, and then they let the best coach they could ever hope to land (if you are ASU) get away. ASU is small time and they always will be, they deserve to be, it is what they have chosen. ASU = Annomous State University. GO MEMPHIS TIGERs and SOOOIE PIG... GO HOGS. |
Well I agree with some of the things you said, BUT, what was Nolan asking for that they could not agree on. I keep hearing that it is all about Nolan's son. Nolan wanted to stay at ASU for maybe 2 years and then have his son take over. If this is true did ASU want his son to be the coach. I wouldn't want him. Think about it.
You can't agree to everything somone wants just to satisfy people. You have to look at the future of the program.

BUT if they really wanted to win, they would have given Nolan what he wanted.

Not at the cost of completely killing their program by handing it over to "Notes' in s couple years.

Thank You Mike for agreeing with me. Notes is NOT the answer.

Deman,
you are what i call a fair weather fan....Im sorry, I love MY Indians....so yeah please dont post again concerning the school that makes jonesboro a city, the same way UCA makes conway a city. I cant take those who love one minuet then unless all is perfect ,hate it the next. I hate the bureaucratic BS too but I will always support the school .
Its kinda like ,only loven the Cardinals when they are in the word series. Either you are a fan or you aren't. Apparently u aren't.

I agree with that Mike. Notes is a terrible coach and person.

If they were still the Indians I might still support them, but there not , they are nearly extinct animals now, They gotta do something to earn the fans in my book.

I will make one final exception to my policy of not bothering to address Annoymous State University. I can understand that at first glance I might seem like a "fair weather fan" to you. I hold no anomosity towards you for thinking that.
Let me give you some background on THIS "fair weather fan". My brother enrolled at ASU in 1970. I was 11 years old at that time.. I followed and worshipped guys like Don Scaife, Coach Marvin Adams, Calvin Harrell, Bill Bergey. I enrolled at ASU in 1976 and graduated from ASU in 1980. Every year...year after year I have followed and supported ASU. This has been over a period of 38 years
So I guess you can call me a "fair weather fan of 38 years". I have had it with the stupidity and arrogance of the "Powers that BE" who control ASU Athletics. I have been disapointed for too many years by these fools. If this makes me a "fair wea
ther fan"......hey, write it down cuz thats exactly what I am. But I am done with ASU. You true "fans".....I hope you enjoy the direction ASU is going in. It should be very familiar to you.
CardsfaninAR- 03-12-2008
It is possible that I am wrong, BUT there is no way Nolan Richardson lands at Indiana. IU has had enough of its own problems over the last few years with coaches, and I expect the university has learned from its mistakes since Knight left.
I do not think it is fair to call Deman a fair weather fan. With his last post, it sounds like he wants what some folks in NEA has wanted since the Convocation Center was constructed, and that is a consistently, competitive basketball program. This does not imply that the teams have to be NCAA tournament bound every year. It just means that fans of the Indians / Red Wolves basketball wants to know that the program is consistently going in the right direction which it currently is not.
In all fairness though, I hope Deman's loyalty does not hinge on Nolan coaching in Jonesboro, because as exicting as it sounds, Nolan is not the answer for Arkansas State. The school, its basketball program, and the regular fan both needs and deserves a young, hungry assistant from another mid-level university that has something to prove. (Sorry, but I have no recommendations in this category.) If that is not the administrations goal, then it is possible that someone with a bigger name which is looking to rebuild his reputation is the answer. (Rob Evans)
Last item, there is no comparison between Cardinals fans and ASU fans. For Heaven's sake, even Cubs fans are frustrated after 100 years of losing.

James Dickey...all that it would take to have an honorable program!!!
For all those who wanted Nolan for any other reason than to see every seat full, you might as well not be a fan. Why? Well that is simply wishing for complete and utter destruction to the community of Jonesboro. I haven't been there in ages, but growing up there leaves me with at least a little sense of pride enough to not want the crime rate going up any more than it already is. ASU wouldn't only be forking out more money just to get Nolan, but to also beef up the ASU Police troops to prepare for insanity!
He needs to go work at a UAPB, MO St., Arkansas Baptist CC, or something where he will get to show up when he wants and people will bow down to him just to have a chance to open the bathroom stall for him.
Being sober minded to end this...
I never went to ASU, (UCA!!!) but I grew up as a kid there in the summers playing hoops. Dickie might not have been the best coach, but he was a good person. Let's keep the program honest and clean. Let's don't hit the new mascot era becoming known as the outlaws. Go after a James Dickey, or Evans, but not a disloyal outsider.
The people that will make a decision on who to hire are going to hire who they think will best represent their ASU family. Would you hire Nolan to represent your family?
Cardfan...please take a look at the career wins column in Men's college basketball before you compare Nolan to "THE GREAT" Bobby Knight please. No disrespect, but Bobby does graduate his kids and keeps them out of jail. If you want to compare former IU coaches to Nolan how about the most recent departure. That is his twin brother.

Thank you....this is the best post and the most logical one I have seen on this entire thread. I agree with 100% of it. Nolan would have been the worst possible choice for ASU. His alleged demands were outrageous and ASU would have to have been stupid to accept them. I commend Dr. Potts for setting his foot down to this deal. Yes, Nolan was a great coach back in the day but as you all know, he went a little off the deep end his final season. He went so far off the deep end that no other school wanted to hire him. You can talk all you want about his lawsuit with UofA being the reason he wasn't coaching but don't you guys think if a top-tier school wanted him they would be willing to pay him MUCH MUCH more per year than he was getting from his settlement? I guarantee Nolan will not be the coach of a D1 program this year as long as he continues to demand Notes be an assistant. It is very clear getting Notes a job is the driving force behind this episode. Anybody that says they are no longer a "fan" of the school because we didn't hire Nolan wasn't a "fan" to begin with. Now that this ordeal is over with there won't be so many "experts" and "theories" and "sources" to have to deal with on here. Win or Lose I am a PROUD Arkansas State University fan, supporter, and 2 time Alumni and always will be regardless.

I never compared Nolan Richardson to Bobby Knight, because there is no comparison. The fact is an earlier post questioned if Nolan will land at IU, and I thought I made it clear that Indiana has expereinced enough problems over the last few years that Nolan was not going there, meaning with Nolan comes problems. IU wants to go the other way.

Thats great. I really commend your youthful attitude. Get ready for ALOT more losing. Right now, I'm watchin Memphis trounce Tulane on TV. Memphis is 30 and 1 on the season. They are about to be 31 and 1. A few years ago Memphis went out and got a coach who was nationally known and could recruit nationally. That's why they are winners. Most colleges with smart administrators try to follow Memphis's blueprint.
