In reference to the why make it a sport, question. It needs a season for the kids and parents involved just like any other sport. Therefore, the AAA has gotten involved. What has been totally ignored in this whole discussion is the people who run the businesses, travel to the schools to do the training, etc, .....lwhile in it for the love of the sport, still are making megabucks$$$$ off of their sports. Check out the costs for participating at these places if you don't believe it. It is extracurricular if it is quote, "the ??High School CHeerleaders". BB, FB, VB, Baseball, etc all have a season. Why should the sport of cheerleading be any different. If there were no end to FB , BB, etc, seasons coaches would schedule 50 games.
Regulations and rules are there to protect kids from over exuberant coaches, parents, sometimes kids themselves, and in some instances, businesses for profit. Even when they are dedicated to their sport.
There are certainly some cases where kids are pressured to decide which sport they want to pursue at a very early age due to pressure from coaches in each sport. SEE JO Volleyball, AAU BB, traveling softball teams, spring 7 on 7 HS football, cheerleading, et all!!
Let kids be kids!
Give it a season and make the offseason outside of the school's calendar year.

Maybe us cheerleaders love cheering so much that we do want to do it all year around! When we tryout for it we know that it is an all year thing and we know we will be gone every night. If you dont want to be gone every night then dont do it! We love what we do and we want to put our time into it to be THE BEST maybe we wont be the best this year but you can keep on working in the summer or whenever and you can try your hardest to be the best the next time you get on that floor! Cheerleading is a spirit group but we do have compitions and rivarys just like and other sports do. And yes it is a spirit group. But its not joke to us like some people think it is

You are so right but then again not everyone can do a full down.
Not everyone can do a full or a lay out or even a back tuck. Not eveyone can go through 4 or 5 three hour practices a week just to have the routine changed the night before a competion because someone got sick and still get the job done.

And this is Arkansas, here we pronounce and spell the words however we see fit.

Thanx

But one could be taught to do those things.
You cant teach someone to knock down a 250 pound linebacker, or run up and down the court for 32 minutes.
At least not easily.

Again you are wrong, I have been around cheerleading a long time and have seen these kids. There have been some coming up to the gym week after week that still cant do the basic back hand spring and there are some that have been doing this stuff for 3-4 years that cant do a tuck. It is not as easy as most think.

This post was a long time ago but i do have something to say with this whole conversation with yal...full downs are not easy! If you dont know what you are doing then you can get hurt. I broke my nose three times last year doing it. a girl got a concusion on our squad from doing a double full. And for tumbling you may just look at that and say wow that is so easy to teach YOUR WRONG!! it takes some people forever to learn how to do them the correct way. you can turn your wrist wrong and your out for the year because something happened to it. When you look at all of these sports and the "spirit" group they have simaliar things that you do. You still have to be taught what you are doing and if you dont do it correct you cost the game or you get hurt so GET OVER IT!!

I know the few years we was at ACC my girl was up there 4-5 times a week and even in the off season she was up there 3 times a week. SHe loved it. I got the parents get burned out before the kids that love this stuff. So dont go trying to change the way the already like it.

It has a season. The state championships are February 2, and NEARsports Radio will broadcast the event LIVE for the second year in a row.

Feb 2nd is the reason that they try out to be a cheerleader. Nothing else matters!!!!

Cheerleading is more of a sport than Band, NASCAR, and horseracing. Just shy of gymnastics which is a very tough sport.
