Yes you are entitled to your own opinion. Even if it is wrong. Millions of people stop at stop signs every day but there are a couple that dare to stay there and argue with it and I know that you are one of the few that just might win that argument. Carry on young man and make us all proud.

Really don't have a dog in this fight and I have nothing against cheerleades. I am more playing devil's advocate than anything.

Here is my "problem" with calling it a sport. If it wasn't for football and basketball then cheerleaders wouldn't exist. I think it is kinda hard to call what they do a "sport" when they are dependent on another sport for their existence.

There are no football or basketball players present when these athletes compete against each other for championships.

Cheerleading is more of a sport than NASCAR, and horseracing.

I wouldnt go that far... but I agree it is a sport.

I know that, doesn't change the fact that they wouldn't exist without them. I think football and basketball would exist without cheerleaders.

about this school cheerleading isnt the only type of cheerleading you still have allstar compitions...so why do you have to have football for cheerleading? You dont have to have it

Coach James - ACC- 01-28-2008
In the past, I can see where the point would be that if there was no basketball/football there would be no more cheerleading. But today, that is not true. In fact, its totally fictious.

With the mainstreaming of all-star cheerleading, which I actual would refer to it more as cheer-athletics, allows for cheerleading to continue and be a viable athletic endeavor.

The majority of the people against cheerleading being a sport have never seen an all-star cheer competition. I personally can forgive their ignorance just because when you dont have knowledge of something you really cant say much about it. Most of their opinions are without fact and without intelligence.

And yes, people are entitled to their opinions. So be it. But I see first hand the skills and athletic abilities of the kids in my gym. I know what they put themselves through in order to be the best.

And i will say again, i have played just about every sport you can think of, and I still find that cheerleading/cheer-athletics can be more intense and just as physical as any other sport.

Remember one thing, Cheerleaders don't need balls to be considered an athlete.

Valerie Ninemire is a member of the AACCA and editor of Cheer Coach and Advisor magazine. She pretty much says no.

http://cheerleading.about.com/od/skillsand...s/a/031002a.htm

Actually That is incorrect because they are now in voting process trying to make it a sport. We dont want it to due to all the regulations that will be put on cheerleading. Cheerleading isnt going to be cheerleading if it does become a sport!

CoachKP- 02-08-2008
Valerie Ninemire says

"A physical activity which involves propelling a mass through space or overcoming the resistance of a mass
A con-*test*-('") or competition against or with an opponent
Is governed by rules which explicitly define the time, space and purpose of the con-*test*-('") and the conditions under which a winner is declared
The acknowledged primary purpose of the competition is a comparison of the relative skills of the participants "
What is Cheerleading?

"With the criteria above in mind, is the primary purpose of cheerleading to compete? Well, presently no." <---------- This is where she is WRONG!

All-star cheerleading is all about competition. They do nothing else but put together a routine and compete. Schools, Majority of the kids only compete to for competition. Take away competition and they will quit and join allstars!

In the school setting, competition is not the primary purpose for having a cheerleading squad. Yes or No?
