| Really don't have a dog in this fight and I have nothing against cheerleades. I am more playing devil's advocate than anything. Here is my "problem" with calling it a sport. If it wasn't for football and basketball then cheerleaders wouldn't exist. I think it is kinda hard to call what they do a "sport" when they are dependent on another sport for their existence. |

| Cheerleading is more of a sport than NASCAR, and horseracing. |

There are no football or basketball players present when these athletes compete against each other for championships. |

| In the past, I can see where the point would be that if there was no basketball/football there would be no more cheerleading. But today, that is not true. In fact, its totally fictious. With the mainstreaming of all-star cheerleading, which I actual would refer to it more as cheer-athletics, allows for cheerleading to continue and be a viable athletic endeavor. The majority of the people against cheerleading being a sport have never seen an all-star cheer competition. I personally can forgive their ignorance just because when you dont have knowledge of something you really cant say much about it. Most of their opinions are without fact and without intelligence. And yes, people are entitled to their opinions. So be it. But I see first hand the skills and athletic abilities of the kids in my gym. I know what they put themselves through in order to be the best. And i will say again, i have played just about every sport you can think of, and I still find that cheerleading/cheer-athletics can be more intense and just as physical as any other sport. Remember one thing, Cheerleaders don't need balls to be considered an athlete. |
