Grim- 10-28-2006
This is a new weekly column in which I will recognize the heroes and the zeroes of the previous week. Pretty simple right? Let's get to it!
THUMBS UP
XAVIER - This NEARsports Platinum member continues to rise above and beyond the call of duty! As you will read below, our laptop is being worked on, so XAVIER has stepped up, AGAIN, with his laptop so the show can go on. It is because of him that we will be able to continue to broadcast while we wait for ours to return. It is for that reason that XAVIER has now been given a Kryptonite member tag. It's the least I can do.
Southern Bank of Commerce - The Miller boys did a fantastic job last weekend broadcasting a few games of the Joe V. Jones Classic. Now, they have agreed to help us with the NEA Tournament. Here is why that is significant. Last year, we aired the games from the main floor only. One radio station, one court. Now we have TWO stations. The guys have agreed to help broadcast the girls games from the upper court on NSR1, while I do the boys games on NSR2! Now the ENTIRE NEA Tournament will air on NEARsports Radio! Thanks guys!
Sloan-Hendrix, Mount Pleasant & Hoxie - These three schools, as usual, bent over backwards to make it possible for us to broadcast from their campuses this past week. We can't thank them enough, and we look forward to working with them again in the future.
Harding University - We have been granted full broadcast rights to any Harding University game on NEARsports Radio. Our first Harding broadcast is today at 2pm when the Bisons host my alma mater, the Henderson State
Reddies. Way to go, Harding! You guys get it!
THUMBS DOWN
United States Postal Service - Our laptop needed warranty work from the manufacturer. Desperately. Friday, October 20, I shipped the unit to Texas via USPS 2-3 day Priority Mail. 13 bucks. Monday, October 23, the unit arrives in Texas....in the wrong town. No reason. Just somebody screwed up. OK. I understand. These things happen. The town it ended up in, Longview, TX, is only 4 hours from where it was supposed to go, Temple, TX. It'll get there tomorrow, right? Wrong. Tuesday: Nobody knows where it is. Wednesday: Nobody knows where it is. Thursday: It FINALLY shows up in Temple. But no one from the post office there will deliver it. "Acer picks up their own packages from here every day," said the Temple postal worker. "They have already picked up for the day." It was 11am. "Look, man," I said. "I paid 13 bucks for YOU to deliver the package. If YOU aren't going to take my package where it needs to be RIGHT NOW, then YOU need to give me my $13 back!" My computer was delivered that afternoon. We have to wait an extra week to get the laptop back now because of the ineptitude of the United States Postal Service. Great job, USPS. I knew I could count on you.
Black Rock - We were planning on broadcasting the Tuckerman at Black Rock game this Monday night. No dice. I got a call from them and was informed that the Technology Director of Black Rock Schools has a "problem" with the fact that we are a commercial enterprise, and that we would be earning revenue using their internet connection. Oh really?? So if a conventional radio station comes to Black Rock to broadcast a game, are you going to deny them the use of a phone line? What if KAIT shows up to shoot a game for the 10 o'clock news? Are you going to tell them they can't use your electricity? Are you kidding me?? Bad form, Black Rock! Thumbs way, way down!
Ref haters - Thumbs down to all the NEARsports members this week who actually tried to justify screaming at high school referees. There is NO situation where this behavior is acceptable or excusable. EVER. Grow up.
That's this week's edition. Be back next week for more!
